8-week Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction

Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a clinically researched and structured approach to mindfulness. With mindfulness meditation at its core, this program focuses on cultivating formal and informal mindfulness practices as a foundation to psychological and emotional well-being. Hence, this is suitable for anyone seeking self-discovery and life balance amid the stresses of daily living.
The program is deeply experiential. Each weekly 2-hour session takes place in a classroom and combines guided meditations, reflective inquiry, gentle movement, and group dialogue. What is introduced in class is then supplemented with home practice and an 'All-Day' session between weeks 6 and 7. Participants do not need to have meditated before, but are required to attend an MBSR Orientation and submit a Pre-program Registration Form before embarking on the full program.
Over time and with practice, participants develop their skill of 'present-seeing' and become more able to create greater ease in their lives beyond the MBSR classroom. Class size is kept intimate with a minimum class size to begin, so start by indicating your interest early. Understand more about Mindfulness/MBSR HERE.
WHAT BECOMES POSSIBLE?
Multiple decades of scientific research suggest the benefits of practising mindfulness. While the benefits are not guaranteed or exactly the same for every person, some benefits that participants have experienced include:
  • Reduced stress
  • Reduced anxiety and depression
  • Increased ability to self-regulate emotions and perspectives
  • Improved mental ability and capacity
  • Greater sense of connection inwardly and outwardly
  • Improved overall well-being
POTENTIAL RISKS
Participants have sometimes described that going through the MBSR Program is stressful, because it involves them looking closely at themselves to gain greater self-awareness. This includes perhaps opening aspects of their lives where they may have been unwilling to explore in the past or are not ready for sometimes. This may leave participants with feelings of vulnerability, fear, heaviness, anxiety or pain, as they discover new ways of being with the present moment.
Thus, during the MBSR Program, self-pacing and self-care are emphasized. Each individual is responsible for exercising their own judgement and attention to what is truly called for in the moment. While group sharing is encouraged, it is supportive and respect is given to the needs of each participant. Also, with the mindful movement exercises, participants are encouraged to acknowledge their own limits and to only go as far as they can to avoid strain or injury. Participants who have issues with any of the practices, due to physical injury or limitation, are encouraged to inform the instructor prior to the start of an MBSR Program, so that care can be taken as needed.
It is important to note that the MBSR Program is not group therapy and not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment. If in doubt, one is encouraged to seek the advice of his/her healthcare professional on the suitability of attending the MBSR Program. In The Present and its trainers are not medical professionals, and offer MBSR only as a means for personal development in a wellness setting for the purpose of stress reduction.
