About Coaching

WHAT IS COACHING?
Coaching, at its very core, is an exploration - a journey of discovery - that supports meaningful and lasting personal and professional growth. By engaging in thoughtful inquiry and conversation, where your coach stays curious toward your stated goals, you are supported to uncover answers already within and create the future that you want.
  • Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.
    ~ Carl Jung

Frequently asked questions

WHEN SHOULD I CONSIDER / NOT CONSIDER COACHING?
In general, working with a coach can be useful when you feel the need to make a change in your life and you would like some support to 'figure out' the unchartered path ahead. But if you are seeking advice or support in processing past issues, then perhaps other modalities like mentoring, counselling or therapy may be more suitable. Explore more HERE the specific situations and types of coaching that you may consider. Or, simply book a complimentary Discovery Call with us, so we can help you understand if coaching is indeed a suitable next step for you.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A COACHING CONVERSATION?
While this differs between clients and from one session to the next, below are some examples of discussion that may be had within a coaching context.
  • Self-reflection and inquiry
  • Build awareness of personal narratives
  • Understand the barriers faced
  • Challenge limiting beliefs
  • Acknowledge strengths and achievements
  • Explore new approaches and what it takes
  • Strategize and plan
  • Build accountability for actions and results
  • Discover new passions and purpose
  • Adopt better ways of being and doing
WHY NOT LEVERAGE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ('AI') COACHING?
Artificial Intelligence is an evolving space. With AI Coaching where it stands, it provides for instant, on-demand quick fixes that seem to give what one may be looking for - SOLUTIONS. If a tool to "just give me a few quick tips to solve for me" is what one is seeking, then perhaps the convenience works. But there are its limitations. And here are just a few:
  • AI Coaching products have been especially useful for scenarios or outcomes that can be rehearsed and are typically repeatable, e.g., interview preparation, habit design, progress tracking etc. It pushes one through a well-designed, step-by-step process. But this journeying is standardized and cookie-cutter-like, and we know that a one-size-fits-all approach with coaching does not work for every individual, who is intrinsically unique.
  • Giving solutions runs contrary to a basic tenet in coaching of not giving answers or advice, since the client really is his or her own expert.
  • The instantaneous nature of AI Coaching can feel rushed. It does not leave much room for one to really do the inner thinking and discover own's own answers - which more often, are the ones that stick and drive meaningful change.
So, here is our perspective, but test what works for you. Wisdom begins with wonder. A coaching process is a live unfolding with a coach, whose curiosity in the moment and experience to pick up emotional nuances or non-verbal cues cannot be scripted. It is this that creates space for a client's deep work to happen that eventually allows movement - from unconscious to awareness, from reactivity to wisdom - to emerge in one's own time. This cannot be rushed or replicated.
HOW IS COACHING DIFFERENT FROM COUNSELLING, THERAPY, MENTORING, OR CONSULTING?
COUNSELLING and THERAPY are similar in that both support mental well-being and are past-focused. In these approaches, the client seeks professional support in a counsellor or a therapist to treat distress toward a baseline of health and healing. The counsellor or therapist leverages his or her expertise to diagnose and offer practical or clinical advice and solutions. The difference between the two approaches lie in perhaps the scope of issues explored, which can range from specific or everyday challenges to deeper, more complex patterns of past emotional and psychological trauma toward resolving dysfunction and managing mental health.
MENTORING is where a mentor imparts wisdom and shares direct advice based on his or her own lived experience, knowledge and skill. Typically career-focused, the mentee is guided and learns from the mentor who 'has been there before' in this partnership.
CONSULTING is typically used in organizations to fix specific business challenges. This involves a process where a consultant diagnoses the problem and offers specific recommendations. Here, the consultant is the provider (and at times implementor) of solutions.
COACHING, in contrast, works with the client as the expert of his or her own life. This means a coach does not provide solutions or advice. Rather, a coach facilitates the client's thinking and reflection - thus, supporting the client to discover his or her own insights. The approach is future-oriented and action-focused. This means a coach partners with the client to craft his or her own strategies to integrate insights, stay accountable and get from the present to the future the client intends to create.
THE next chapter. author it. build it.
