About Gottman Method Couples Therapy
WHAT IS THE 'GOTTMAN METHOD'?
The Gottman Method Couples Therapy is a scientifically researched and structured approach to healthy relationships developed by Dr John M. Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman.
The method works to defuse conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, remove barriers that create relationship 'gridlock', and foster greater empathy and understanding in the relationship. Its interventions are designed to strengthen relationships in three primary areas: friendship, conflict management, and the creation of shared meaning.
In working with this method, couples learn to turn 'gridlock' into dialogue and acceptance, replace negative patterns with positive interactions, repair past hurts and prevent relapse.
